Process
Various reference videos are collected (or recorded of myself performing the reference, such as the death animation), and then the movement is studied and broken down in a way that would be suitable in a video game environment.
Reference videos are inserted directly into Autodesk Maya as a separate image plane. Animation layers are used to help facilitate making changes when needed as the animation becomes more complex, such as animating the pelvis on one layer, and animating the arms on another.
More “cinematic” animations, such as the death animation, are first animated on stepped tangents before being splined, while more “gameplay-oriented” animations, such as the run animations, are planned out through layers to accommodate for potential changes in stance due to player input.
